I never knew there were programs where doctors had to pay to go work somewhere.<br /><br />You also bring up an excellent point about how volunteering in these places can create dependence that can never be shaken. I think that it's a serious concern that a lot well meaning people don't spend enough time thinking about. I once read an article about Tom's shoes and how even though the sentiment behind the companies "buy a pair, give a pair" way of operating is coming from a good place it can actually be hurting the local economy in these places by taking jobs (of the shoe making kind) from the people who live there.<br /><br />It sounds like the program you went over with was wonderful, however.
