When the tricuspid and mitral valves open during diastole gravity directs the blood flow to the ventricles which actually do contract.<br />If you get a chance use your little ultrasound on a patient with an intra-aortic balloon. Watch the effect of the balloon inflating just after the dicrotic notch on the ECG and the reversal of blood flow in the aorta. You can see how this dramatically increases coronary blood flow.
